WIP Wednesday – A Robber’s Daughter in Neon Green

Happy WIP-Wednesday everyone!

Do you know Astrid Lindgren’s „Ronja Rövardottir“ (Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter)? I’ve loved this book since childhood, and I still sometimes take it out to read or watch the dvd.
Seems only fitting to knit a cape worth of a bandit’s daughter…

So, a couple of days ago, while dutifully knitting away on my 5^th stocking in a row (if I haven’t lost count), I had a revelation. I definitely needed to knit something that’s not a sock and not lace or fingering weight And I needed to cast it on. This. Minute. Honestly.

Happily I cast aside the dpn’s and started browsing my Ravelry library for patterns with huge needle-sizes. I’ve had a collection of capes I’ve been considering but totally forgot about. When I stumbled across this one by chance I knew: This would be mine to wear come fall! Diving into my stash I discovered that I didn’t have the right yarn available.

Well, there was the Kid Light from Schachenmayr that’s been lying around (neglected) for quite some time, but it’s too thin and the color is far from perfect. It was a bargain basement purchase (do you know that insane urge to buy a yarn because it’s been downpriced so much, even though you have NO IDEA what you’ll ever do with it?) and so I bought it in spite of the really green green color. I mean, it’s so green, it almost glows in the dark. Also, I only have 4 complete balls of it, so taking it doubled would cut it really close (about 70 m less than the pattern calls for). The perfect solution would have been to just buy a matching light brown or dark green colorway of the same yarn and knit with one strand of each color held together. Nice melange effect, weight problem solved and no trouble with running out of yarn. But I’d have to wait until the next day to get it. And, see above, cast on had to be within the hour.

The Rövardottir-Cape in it’s early stages… languishing in the heat. It’s only fair, I’ve been the one to languish before.

Knitting fuzzy thin yarn with 7mm needles isn’t as much fun as I imagined. But it’s no sock, so I’m happy!

So now I’m knitting with two strands of glow in the dark green yarn I might not have enough of to complete the project (even though Garnstudio patterns mostly have a very generous margin). Am I stupid or what?! I already feel I’ll like rue the day… and a little stupid, baking in the late evening sunshine with a fuzzy, green, warm project on my needles that’ll soon be growing into a fuzzy, green, very warm blanket I’ll have to somehow keep from draping all over my lap to avoid dying of heat stroke.

I’m still happy though. 🙂

Kennt ihr Ronja Räubertochter? Ich liebe dieses Buch seit meiner Kindheit und hole es selbst heute noch gelegentlich aus dem Regal oder schaue mir die Verfilmung an. Da scheint es nur passen zu sein, einen Poncho zu stricken, der einer Räubertochter würdig ist…

Warum erzähle ich das? Vor ein paar Tagen, während ich mich pflichtbewusst durch den fünften Strumpf in Folge strickte, hatte ich eine Erleuchtung. Ich musste etwas stricken, das weder ein Socken, noch aus Strumpfwolle war. Und zwar SOFORT.

Glücklich warf ich das Nadelspiel beiseite und durchforstete die Ravelry Datenbank nach Projekten mit wirklich dicken Nadeln… und in meiner To-do-Liste fand sich ein Cape, das ich vollkommen vergessen hatte. Ich wusste sofort: Das würde ich im Herbst tragen! Zu dumm nur, dass in meinem Stash kein einziges passendes Garn zu finden war.

Einzig das Kid Light von Schachenmayr kam ungefähr in Frage. Allerdings war es viel zu dünn. Und wahrscheinlich knapp zu wenig, um es doppelt zu nehmen. Und es ist grün. Nicht moosgrün. Nicht apfelgrün. Nein, es ist so grün, dass es fast im Dunkeln leuchtet. Die perfekte Lösung wäre gewesen, ein dunkleres Grün oder helles Braun dazu zu kaufen. Das gäbe einen tollen Melange-Effekt und das Problem mit der Lauflänge wäre auch gelöst. Aber dann hätte ich bis zum nächsten Tag warten müssen (mindestens) und das kam, siehe oben, nicht in Frage.

Also stricke ich jetzt mit zwei Fäden eines neongrünen Garns, von dem ich eventuell nicht genug habe (auch wenn Garnstudio meistens recht großzügig bei der Berechnung der Garnmenge ist). Bin ich eigentlich bescheuert? Ich habe jetzt schon das Gefühl, dass ich diesen Tag bereuen werde. Und komme mir etwas dämlich vor, während ich mit meinem fusseligen, grünen, warmen Projekt in der Abendsonne brate – wenn das ganze Ding erstmal gewachsen ist, werde ich mir etwas ausdenken müssen, damit ich nicht am Hitzschlag krepiere.

Glücklich bin ich trotzdem 🙂
